Author Allison Crecelius hits the target with this detailed explanation of biophilic design!
Biophilic design is rooted in the idea that humans have an innate connection to nature. In an increasingly built and urban world, most individuals lack that key connection. Studies over the years have shown that natural views can have a seriously positive impact. For interiorscapers looking to retain or land new business, these studies may help to support the value of your services. Take a look at some powerful statistics from studies that illustrate some of the tangible benefits of biophilic design.
THE BENEFITS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN FOR BUSINESSES
1. CONSUMERS ARE WILLING TO PAY MORE FOR PRODUCTS IN GREENER SETTINGS
Survey respondents indicated they were much more willing to pay a higher price for products in a greener setting as opposed to a bare one. After seeing images of green spaces, those surveyed noted they’d be willing to pay 20 percent more for convenience items, up to 25 percent more for items such as a new jacket or watch, and up to 15 percent more for specialty shopping items, such as a gift for a family member.
2. EMPLOYEES TAKE LESS SICK LEAVE
A three phase study conducted by the University of Oregon found that employees with more natural light and views of nature took less sick leave. Employees with poor light and views took 68 hours of sick leave per year, while team members with views of landscapes and trees took an average of 57 hours of sick leave per year.
3. TEAM MEMBERS ARE MORE PRODUCTIVE
Views of vegetation were found to improve worker productivity by 6 to 12 percent in a 2003 study. Workers with a view at the Sacramento Municipal Utility District processed calls faster when they had a view. A second study at a different facility found that team members with a view performed 10 to 25 percent better on memory recall testing.
4. OFFICE BUILDING VALUE INCREASES BY UP TO 7 PERCENT
There is evidence that effective usage of vegetation in and around office buildings can help to increase the value of the building. Researchers evaluated office buildings by a variety of aesthetic criteria and overlaid it with data points like building office size and rental rates. They found that buildings with a good aesthetic value due to vegetation added approximately 7 percent to the rental rate of the building.
THE BENEFITS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN FOR HOSPITALS
5. SURGERY PATIENTS CAN RECOVER FASTER
Most surgery patients would prefer a fast and safe recovery. One of the most cited studies of biophilic design from 1984 found that on average, gallbladder patients who had exterior views recovered nearly a day faster than patients without a view.
6. PATIENTS TEND TO USE LESS MEDICATION
Patients should be able to get the medication they need during surgery recovery. However, for patients that had exterior lighting and views, they tended to use less pain medication. Based on their experiment, the study found that patients took 22 percent less pain medication compared to others without exterior lighting and views.
THE BENEFITS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN IN HOTELS
7. A LARGER PERCENTAGE OF GUESTS SPEND TIME IN LOBBIES WITH BIOPHILIC DESIGN
On-site analysis of hotels with and without biophilic design found that 36 percent of occupants in the lobby were actively using the space, as opposed to 25 percent in standard hotel lobbies. By extension, hotels that incorporate natural elements into their spaces have additional opportunities to meet customer needs.
8. BIOPHILIC HOTEL EXPERIENCES ARE MORE MEMORABLE
Memorable experiences make for repeat customers. In an analysis of online reviews, hotel locations that incorporate biophilic elements received more mentions about the “experience” at the hotel as compared to more standard hotels.
THE BENEFITS OF BIOPHILIC DESIGN IN EDUCATION
9. STUDENTS PERFORMED BETTER ON TESTS
Studies from a variety of schools indicate an increase in student test scores when students have access to a more biophilic environment. In one study, students tested 7-18 percent higher than those without daylight or window views.
10. STUDENTS HAVE FEWER ABSENCES
It’s much easier to teach a concept when a student is present. One Washington state school estimated green, biophilic design contributed to a 15 percent reduction in absenteeism.
